Sanoma

Retreat center & Chapel

Retreat center SNOAN is a place for silence, devotion, and rest in Lappvik, Hanko, whose oldest building parts date back to the 19th century. We were commissioned to design a new building to replace the old accommodation and chapel, which no longer meet today’s needs. The aim is to preserve the area’s original character, as well as its connection to the old cottage.

The ensemble consists of a chapel, guest rooms, and a separate sauna building. Together, the buildings form a meditative whole, where the daily movement between them becomes as important as the spaces themselves. Nature and the surrounding views also play an essential role in the spatial experience.

The bedrooms are designed as monastery-like cells, with a minimalist and timeless interior. Particular attention has been given to good acoustics and to material choices that engage all the senses.
